Once upon a time there was a man who owned a mule and a dog. The mule's name was Bill. The dog had no name at all.
                    Early every morning the man went to his field to get his mule. He always said, "Come here, Bill" and the mule came.
                    One morning the man slept late. When he got out of bed, he drank a cup of coffee. Then his eyes began to open, and he thought about his mule. He wanted to eat breakfast, and his wife did, too, so he called his son and said, "Go to the field for me, Son, and get the mule."
                    The boy liked to get the mule. He took a rope for the animal and ran to the field.
                    "Come here, Bill," he said.
                     The mule didn't move. He stood and looked at the boy.
                     The boy said, "Don't stand there and look at me. Pa wants you this morning. Come here and put your head through this rope."
                     But the mule only looked at the boy and said, "Every morning someone says, 'Come here, Bill.' I want to sleep in the morning, but someone always says, 'Come here, Bill.' "
                     The boy's eyes opened wide, and dropped the rope. He was a boy who could run fast, and now he did. He ran back to the house and said to his father, "That mule is talking! "
                     "Now, Son, don't tell me a lie. Go get the mule."
                     "I'm telling the truth, Pa. The mule is talking. You have to get him yourself. I can't. I'm afraid.
                     The man shook his head. He turned to his wife and said, "Listen to the boy. I don't think he is telling the truth."
                     "I don't either," said his wife.
                     Then the man got up from the table and went to the field. His dog went, too. The mule was eating grass.
                     "Come here, Bill."
                     The old mule slowly lifted his head. He looked the man in the eye and said, "Every morning somebody says, 'Come here, Bill.' Go home now and let me eat my breakfast."
                     When he heard the mule talk, the man began to run, and his dog did, too. The man ran home. His wife was at the door.
                     "The boy did tell the truth," said the man. "That mule does talk. I never heard a mule talk before."
                     The little dog was sitting by the man's feet. He looked up and said, "I never heard a mule talk, either."
                     Then the man began to run from the dog. He ran into the woods, but the little dog ran with him. The man almost died. Finally he had to stop by a tree to rest. He said, "I'm so tired, I can't run any more."
                     The little dog sat down at the man's feet. He breathed hard and said, "I'm tired, too'"
                     The man is still running.

                    ครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีชายคนหนึ่ง เป็นเจ้าของ ล่อ กับ หมา อย่างละตัว ล่อ นั้น มีชื่อว่า บิลล์ ส่วน หมา ไม่มีชื่อ
                    ทุก ๆ เช้า ชายเจ้าของ ล่อ จะไปที่ทุ่งหญ้า เพื่อ นำมันเข้ามาที่บ้าน เขาจะพูดกับ ล่อ ว่า
                    "มานี่, บิลล์"
                    แล้ว ล่อ ก็จะมากับเขา
                    เช้าวันหนึ่ง เขา ตื่นสาย หลังจากลุกขึ้นจากที่นอนแล้ว เขาได้ดื่มกาแฟหนึ่งถ้วย ซึ่งทำให้เขาลืมตาได้กว้างขึ้น แล้วเขาก็คิดถึง ล่อ แต่ เขาอยากกินอาหารเช้า ซึ่งภรรยาของเขาก็ต้องการเช่นเดียวกัน เขาจึงเรียก ลูกชาย แล้วสั่งว่า
                    "ไปที่ทุ่งหญ้าให้พ่อหน่อย ไปนำ ล่อ เข้ามา"
                    ลูกชาย ชอบงานนี้ เขาถือเชือกไปเส้นหนึ่ง แล้ววิ่งลงไปที่ทุ่งหญ้า
                     "มานี่, บิลล์" เขาเรียก ล่อ
                     ล่อ ไม่ขยับ ยืนนิ่ง ๆ แล้วมอง เด็กผู้ชาย
                     เด็กชายพูดว่า "อย่ามัวยืนอยู่ตรงนั้น แล้วเอาแต่มองฉัน พ่อฉันต้องการแกเช้านี้ มานี่ เอาหัวของแกมาเข้าเชือกนี้"
                     แต่ ล่อ ได้แต่มองเด็กชายแล้วพูดว่า "ทุก ๆ เช้า มีใครคนหนึ่งพูดว่า 'มานี่, บิลล์' ฉันต้องการนอนหลับในตอนเช้า แต่มีใครคนหนึ่ง มักจะพูดเสมอ ๆ ว่า 'มานี่ , บิลล์' "
                     เด็กชาย ดวงตา เบิ่งโพลง ทิ้งเชือก เขาเป็นเด็กที่สามารถวิ่งได้รวดเร็วมาก และ ตอนนี้เขาก็ทำอย่างนั้น เขาวิ่งกลับไปถึงบ้าน พูดกับ พ่อ ว่า
                     "ล่อ ตัวนั้นพูดได้"
                     "นี่ ลูกรัก ! อย่าโกหกพ่อ ไปนำ ล่อ ตัวนั้นมา"
                     "ผมพูดเรื่องจริงครับ พ่อ ! ล่อ พูดได้, พ่อต้องไปนำมันมาด้วยตัวเองแล้วละ, ผมทำไม่ได้, ผมกลัว !"
                     ผู้เป็น พ่อ สั่นหัว หันไปพูดกบภรรยาว่า
                     "ฟังลูกพูดซิ ! ฉันไม่คิดว่าลูกพูดความจริงนะ"
                     "ฉันก็ไม่คิดว่าลูกพูดความจริง" ภรรยาตอบ
                     ผู้เป็นสามีจึงลุกขึ้นจากที่นั่ง แล้วออกไปที่ทุ่งหญ้า หมา ของเขาก็ไปด้วย ล่อ กำลังกินหญ้า
                     "มานี่, บิลล์"
                     ล่อ แก่ ค่อย ๆ ยกหัวขึ้น มันมองหน้าคนผู้ชายแล้วพูดว่า
                     "ทุก ๆ เช้า ใครคนหนึ่งพูด 'มานี่, บิลล์' กลับบ้านไปซะ ! ฉันจะกินอาหารเช้าของฉัน"
                     เมื่อเขาได้ยิน ล่อ พูด เขาก็เริ่มวิ่ง หมา ของเขาก็วิ่งด้วย วิ่งกลับมาถึงบ้าน ภรรยาของเขายืนอยู่ที่ประตู
                     "ลูกพูความจริง ! " สามี บอก ภรรยา และพูดว่า "ล่อ ตัวนั้นพูดได้ ! ฉันไม่เคยได้ยิน ล่อ พูดมาก่อน"
                     หมา ตัวน้อยที่นั่งอยู่ข้าง ๆ เท้าของชายสามี มองขึ้นมาแล้วพูดว่า
                     "ฉันก็ไม่เคยได้ยิน ล่อ พูดมาก่อน !"
                     ดังนั้น คนผู้ชายจึงเริ่มวิ่งหนี หมา ของเขา วิ่งเข้าไปในป่า แต่เจ้า หมา ตัวเล็ก ๆ ก็วิ่งไปกับเขา ชายคนนั้นเหนื่อยแทบตาย และ ในที่สุดเขาไปหยุดอยู่ที่ต้นไม้เพื่อจะพักเหนื่อย เขาพูดว่า
                     "ฉันเหนื่อยเหลือเกิน วิ่งไม่ไหวแล้ว !"
                     หมา น้อย นั่งลงข้าง ๆ เท้าของเขา สูดลมหายใจอย่างแรง แล้วพูดว่า
                     "ผมก็เหนื่อยเหมือนกัน !"
                     ชายคนนั้นจึงวิ่งต่อไปไม่หยุด
